As part of our mission statement, the Geauga Metropolitan Housing Authority (GMHA) has declared that we “intend to provide our residents with as many opportunities for economic self-sufficiency as we can identify,” and that “we endeavor to instill pride and a desire for an enhanced quality of life for our residents and their families.”
In keeping with those intentions, GMHA applied for and was awarded grant funding in 2009 to begin a Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program. We have been encouraged by the success of FSS and our families!
What is Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS)
This is a voluntary program and is designed to promote savings and employment among participants in either the Public Housing (PH) or Section 8 / Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) programs.
Together with the FSS Coordinator; you will set up goals, work towards eliminating any barriers and collaborate with community services to guide you towards success.
How does FSS help?
Since the Family Self-Sufficiency program started, we have seen many graduates move on to private rentals or purchase their own home. Some have utilized the escrow account, which is similar to a savings account, to address barriers to their success, secure long term employment, pay for school, and/or pay for closing costs associated with a home purchase.
How can I apply?
you can apply either through the online tenant portal, complete a paper application at the office or by request.
